Precast concrete pile installation
Step-by-step process, technical criteria and advantages of the DI-BLOCK self-assembling joint system for connecting precast pile segments on site.
The installation of precast concrete piles is one of the most widely used processes in deep foundations for civil engineering, industrial construction, and infrastructure projects. Unlike cast-in-place piles, precast piles are manufactured in a controlled factory environment, ensuring consistent quality and enabling inspection and quality control before delivery to site.
When the required pile length exceeds the maximum transport or handling length, multiple segments must be joined using structural joints. The choice of joint system directly impacts on-site safety, installation time, and overall project cost.
The DIBU SL DI-BLOCK system is a CE-marked self-assembling joint, certified by the Instituto Eduardo Torroja (IETcc-CSIC) under European Technical Assessment ETA 22/0260 and EN 12794 Class A. It eliminates external pins and enables faster, safer, and more repeatable assembly under any site condition.
Step-by-step installation process
Ground preparation and setting out
Before driving begins, a geotechnical survey is carried out, pile positions are defined, and the work area is prepared. Proper planning at this stage significantly reduces subsequent execution times.
Positioning the first pile segment
The first precast concrete pile segment is placed at the defined position. Initial verticality and alignment are critical to ensure correct load transfer into the ground.
Driving the first segment
Using driving equipment (drop hammer, vibrator, or hydraulic press), the first pile segment is pushed down to the target depth. Drive energy is selected based on soil conditions and pile cross-section.
Joining the second segment using a pile joint
Once the first segment has reached the target depth, the second segment is assembled using the joint system. With DI-BLOCK, this process is automatic: the joint self-locks when the new segment is inserted, eliminating external pins or additional manual steps. This reduces the operation by 7 minutes per joint compared to conventional systems.
Driving the full assembly and verification
After connecting the second segment, driving continues until the refusal depth or design depth is reached. Alignment, depth, and drive parameters are checked according to the project quality control plan.
Pile head and pile cap connection
After driving is complete, the pile head is prepared for connection to the pile cap or foundation slab. This includes cutting to level, cleaning, and placing starter bars if required.
