Technical Guide: Precast Pile Joints
Everything you need to know about structural joint systems for precast concrete piles: standards, installation, advantages and selection criteria.
What are precast pile joints?
Precast pile joints are structural mechanical elements that allow connecting sections of precast concrete piles during driving operations. Their main function is to transmit axial, shear and bending forces between pile segments, ensuring structural continuity and foundation integrity.
On site, the efficiency and safety of these connections directly impact project performance: execution times, labor costs, and worker safety largely depend on the chosen joint technology.
Types of pile joints
There are different joint systems for precast piles depending on the connection mechanism used:
Joints with external pins
Traditional system requiring manual insertion of steel pins to lock the joint. Longer installation time and higher labor risk.
Self-assembling joints (DI-BLOCK)
Automatic locking system activated during assembly. Eliminates external pins, reduces installation time by 7 minutes per joint and improves safety.
Welded joints
On-site welded connection. Requires qualified personnel and rigorous quality control. Generally slower than mechanical solutions.
Applicable standards
Precast pile joints are regulated by European standards that establish structural performance requirements and technical assessment procedures:
- EN 12794 Class A – Requirements for precast concrete piles
- EAD 200014-01-0103 – European Assessment Document for pile joints and rock shoes
- Construction Products Regulation (CPR) – CE marking requirement
- Spanish Structural Code – National regulatory framework
- Eurocodes – Structural design according to European standards
Advantages of the DI-BLOCK system
DIBU SL's DI-BLOCK system has been specifically developed to overcome the limitations of traditional joints. It carries the CE mark under European Technical Assessment ETA 22/0260, issued by the Instituto Eduardo Torroja (IETcc-CSIC), Spain's reference notified body for structural construction systems.
